King Charles Convenes Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic for a Private AI Safety Summit

King Charles III hosted senior figures from Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind at Dumfries House in Scotland on September 17, urging the assembled AI leaders to keep the technology "firmly in the service of humanity."

The gathering, organized by the Ditchley Foundation alongside three of the King's own charities — the King's Trust, the King's Foundation, and the Sustainable Markets Initiative — brought together U.K. AI minister Kanishka Narayan and delegates from China to discuss whether the industry could agree on a shared set of guiding principles as AI capabilities accelerate.

The timing was notable: the summit came just days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling on AI labs to deliberately slow the pace of capability gains, a call that both OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk publicly endorsed. Despite the high-profile attendance, the meeting produced no binding commitments — delegates only discussed whether common principles were achievable at all.
