Anthropic, OpenAI and Elon Musk Find Rare Agreement: Slow the AI Race Down

Sep 13, 2026 · by Omeed · 1 reads 0 likes

Three AI leaders who rarely agree on anything found common ground this week: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Elon Musk all called for the AI industry to slow down, amid growing fears that development is outrunning safety work.

In an essay published Saturday, Amodei urged companies and governments to "pace the frontier" of AI advancement, calling for international cooperation and for labs to embed independent third-party evaluators who can report incidents and track safety practices across the industry rather than policing themselves.

Altman responded shortly after on X, saying he agreed with Amodei and that OpenAI would follow suit — a notably fast, public alignment between two labs usually positioned as rivals. Musk added his own voice to the same call, giving the idea rare three-way backing from the people most responsible for how fast the frontier actually moves.
